Day 1
Tokyo to Kusatsu
Leaving Tokyo this morning your route takes you northwards towards Nagano. Leaving the expressway, you will meet the first of the winding roads of your trip.

As you continue along the Nidoage Toge, enjoy the natural scenery, and then onward to the Nihon Romantic Highway. The winding mountain roads continue on and into the first accommodations for your tour in the hot springs town of Kusatsu.

Distance is approx 280km, which can be covered in around 5 hours.

Day 2
Kusatsu to Kashiwazaki
Japan motorcycle tour ninjatours kusatsu kashiwazaki windy road
Kusatsu is a popular onsen resort with a long history and is a popular winter resort with nice atmosphere, as you leave with this in your rear mirror you will skirt Mt. Shirane, an active volcano, cruising past Manza onsen and ski fields and and along the mountain top road towards Shiga Kogen which is a series of famous Ski Resorts.

Stop at the Yokoteyama rest stop for some great scenery and a view of where your course will take you. Shortly after this the “intense option” of todays course diverts off towards Ichinose, or proceed along the course, making a stop to see the famous Jigokudani snow monkeys if you are inclined. You will enjoy the road which winds down the mountain and offers some nice over views of Nagano.

Riding by Nozawa onsen you will follow the river before diverting off towards Matsunoyama onsen, a famous Mountain Hot Spring town, and continue onwards through the varied rural landscape, rice fields small towns and villages to your hotel in Kashiwazaki on Sea of Japan, The sunsets are spectacular here.

Distance is approx. 220km. But again it will probably take most of the day.

Day 3
Kashiwazaki to Yunohama
Start off the day with a ride along the sea side for about 50km before hoping onto the expressway to bypass the traffic around Niigata. Exiting the expressway today's “Intense option” which diverts off into mountains here along Asahi Super Line can be a very challenging ride, or continue on one of my favorite seaside rides along the Sea of Japan. Nothing tricky or technical involved- this is just a very nice cruisy road along the seaside.

Nice restaurants and coffee shops photo spots etc along the way to your seaside hotel at Yunohama Onsen. Enjoy a wander along the beach and catch the sunset.

Distance Approx. 250km, 4.5hrs Riding. Enjoy the rest tonight some big rides await.

Day 4
Yunohama to Hachimantai
japan motorcycle tour ninjatours yunohama hachimantai parking area
Back on the road today you briefly follow the coastline before turning inland to Mt Choukai. The road winds through lush green forest and on up the slopes of Mt Choukai. It's a spectacular way to start your day and the view is equally wonderful. Stop at the top, grab a quick coffee and proceed down the other side of the mountain.

The scenery briefly changes to rice fields before the lush forest and twisting roads begin in earnest as you continue along the Chokai Blue line. Perhaps I should have mentioned there are a lot of them today. The atmosphere and the views are great as are the roads. As you move back to lower altitudes the roads flatten out to easy cruising again and you proceed towards Lake Tazawa which is a hidden gem tucked in the mountains.

Take a ride around the lake, stop for a snack, and you are back on the road heading for Hachimandaira Aspite line. It's famous, and a great ride and takes you to your hotel high on the mountain. I promise you will sleep well tonight.

Total Distance today is around 300km and is about 6.5 hrs riding time.

Day 5
Hachimantai to Naruko Onsen
If you enjoyed the ride along Aspite Line yesterday feel free to backtrack along there again today. It will blend into today's route to Naruko and Ginzan. Alternatively take a brief run down the expressways for great views of Mt. Iwate, before exiting to Lake Gosho and an easy cruise along the Waga River valley. Rural Japan as it really is. Stop at the way pointed coffee shop for coffee or homemade ice cream.

Your route continues following the Minase river for a period as it begins to climb higher, roads are winding but easy. My Favorite coffee shop will appear after an hour and a half or so and it's well worth a stop here. The road climbs and winds its way through Yunohama Pass, easy riding but it's a cool road with some great views before arriving at Hanayama Lake.

Shortly after you will veer of toward Naruko Onsen and Ginzan Onsen both of which a lovely places to stay. Total Distance today is just under 300km and is about 5.5 hrs riding time.

Day 6
Naruko Onsen to Mt. Bandai
Japan motorcycle tours ninjatours naruko onsen bandai mountains road
A Big day awaits. Lots of twisty winding roads again today. Begin with a quiet cruise through rural Yamagata and take a brief expressway stretch before heading into the mountains to Zao Onsen Ski resort. Wind you way into the mountains and along the famous Zao Echo line, a lushly wooded ride on excellent twisty roads with lots of scenery. As you continue onward to Nishi Azuma Sky Valley the road climbs once again as it winds past Shirabe Onsen and Mt Nishi Agatsuma and onwards to Lake Hibara.

The road is very twisty but surface and scenery is great. You will enjoy a brief rest with coffee at the strategically placed Monterey Cafe before forging on to your hotel which sits at top the Azuma Bandai Skyline.

Another awesome road, twisting and tricky but surface and views are outstanding. Enjoy the great view and ambience of your mountain hotel, you will sleep well again tonight. Distance Approx 290km Riding time 5-6hrs.

Otherwise, ride along the Azuma Bandai Lake Line, a nicely wooded winding country road, and on along the Bandai G Line which winds down the mountain past ski field and resorts towards Lake Inawashiro.

Continue on to Ouchi Juku Historic village for some sightseeing if you are inclined. Ride to Mt. Jeans and onward to Nasu Kogen to another strategically located coffee shop in Nasu where you can take a brief break from riding.

As you continue onward riding through attractive rural farming areas you are heading for the Nichinan Momoji Line and Hunter Mountain Ski Field to your hotel in Nikko, a famous onsen and World Heritage site. Total Distance approx. 300km Riding time 5-6 hrs.
